Indian Fry Bread

When the children were young we had two different Indian boys live with us at separate times. One of them, Bobby, I think, wanted Indian Fry Bread but didn't know how to make it. I found a recipe in the Sunset magazine and he showed us how to pat them out. He said they tasted right. When John was in high school, he would bring his friends home and we would serve them with whipped butter and honey. They all loved them.

Recipe of: Janet

Mix together 2 cups unsifted all purpose flour, ½ cup instant nonfat dry milk, 1 tablespoon baking powder, and ½ teaspoon salt. Add 2 tablespoons shortening with your fingers, rub mixture until evenly combined. Use a fork to stir in ¾ cup water; mix until dough clings together. Turn dough out onto a floured board and knead until smooth and velvety, it takes 2-3 minutes. Divide dough into 6 equal portions; shape each into a ball, then flatten to form a 6-7 inch round by patting between the hands. In deep pan heat 1 ½ inches salad oil to 375 degrees, cook patties till golden brown and puffy. Turn once or twice. Serve hot.
